About Durham
Located in the North East of England, Durham is a small city full of history. Having its own coastline, Durham is also famous for its hilly streets, its architecture and for its popular pubs and restaurants.
Places to visit
Durham Cathedral is England’s first Norman cathedral and dates back to 1093. The building itself is one of the country’s most famous landmarks and visitors are welcome to find out more about the history of this iconic building.
The Oriental Museum is the only one in North England devoted exclusively to the art and archaeology of Northern Africa and Asia. From Ancient Egypt to Modern China, this museum has it all.
As surprising as it might sound, Durham Castle has continuously been occupied since the 11th century and is now home to students from University College, which is part of Durham University. You can join of the many free tours available or if you fancy it, you can sign up to a wide range of cultural and walking tours around the city!
Social events and food
While the city is famous for its fascinating history and spectacular Cathedral and Castle, it’s also home to some fantastic places to eat and drink, including fancy fine-dining restaurants, traditional British pubs and trendy brunch spots. There is also plenty of choice for those who’d like a taste of a selection of international cuisines; from Italian and Spanish to Chinese and Indian you won’t know where to start from!
Durham’s Book Festival was founded in 1990 and is one of England’s oldest literary festivals. This takes place every year, usually around October time and it offers a blend of digital and live events at the Gala Theatre and the opportunity to meet with acclaimed authors!
Shopping
Durham Market is home to more than 40 independent retailers and is comprised by the Market Hall and the Weekly Outdoor Market that welcomes food traders and crafters alike. By visiting Durham’s Market not only you’ll go home with some fantastic local goods, but you will also have a shopping experience like no other.
If you feel like you need some ‘retail therapy’ why not visit one of the many shopping centres across the county? From Dalton Park Outlet to Prince Bishops Place, plan a day trip to visit some of the most popular shopping centres in the area.
Transport
Durham is quite a small city and it’s easy to walk around. However, if you want to use public transport you’ll be pleased to know that there’s a free bus that runs through the city called The Bull City Connector.
