NCUK Student Counsellor Conference
Over the course of this three-half day event, attendees were able to participate in a wide range of live sessions delivered by experts from across the NCUK Global Network to gain a better understanding of university admissions and student support processes. What happened at the Student Counsellor Conference?
- Interactive training sessions led by the NCUK team and university staff on topics such as progression options, personal statements, increasing enrolments, studying Medicine, alternative options for students, counsellor personal development and much more!
- An opportunity to meet with colleagues from across the NCUK Global Network and a chance to share best practices in student counselling and student support.
- The opportunity to join Q&A sessions and discussions with NCUK Universities and Staff.

'Welcome to the Student Counsellor Conference' - 8.00am (BST)
Stuart Smith, CEO and Ruth Jones, Associate Director: Student Support welcomed attendees to the NCUK Student Counsellor Conference. This was followed by the conference’s first session about introducing NCUK’s Student Support services which, hosted by Ruth Jones, Associate Director: Student Support.

'NCUK Universities around the world' - 8.45am (BST)
Where can your students progress to?
Hosted by Charlotte Henshaw, Student Support Manager, this session informed counsellors about available progression options and study destinations for NCUK students following completion of their NCUK qualification. The session also included information on the application process for universities outside of the UK.
'How to write a stand-out personal statement' - 9.45am (BST)
This workshop session, hosted by Ruth Jones, Associate Director: Student Support along with a representative from The University of Manchester, offered insights into creating a well-written personal statement which is a key part of the university application process.

'Meet the universities: Part 1' - 11.00am (BST)
Our first of two sessions in collaboration with NCUK Universities, was great opportunity for counsellors to chat with university representatives and ask questions that will help in supporting students at Study Centres. This session was hosted by members of the NCUK University Partnerships team and gave counsellors the option to enter different virtual rooms to speak with each available university within the allotted time.

'Increasing enrolments to NCUK Universities' - 8.00am (BST)
The second day of sessions began with a welcome to all counsellors followed by information on building student conversion. Hosted by Ruth Jones, Associate Director: Student Support and Abby Li, Student Support Manager, the session offered insights into how counsellors can work to promote NCUK University progression.

'Medical routes at NCUK Universities' - 9.00am (BST)
Hosted by Megan White, Student Support Executive along with representatives from Aston University, UCLan and UNSW Sydney, counsellors learnt more about Medicine as a study route and available alternative routes. Staff shown where students can apply to including options for students who want to progress to Nursing and other Health-related degrees.

'Application to enrolment: what happens after students apply to university?' - 11.30am (BST)
This session which discusses the next steps in the university application process was hosted by Ruth Jones, Associate Director: Student Support, along with representatives from Manchester Metropolitan University, The University of Sheffield, Cardiff University, RMIT University and the University of Kent. Topics covered during this discussion were timescales for a decision, what a student might also have to provide (e.g. a portfolio or attend an interview) as well as giving university representatives the opportunity to share details on the process of an interview.

'"Help! I didn't achieve my grades." What happens next?' - 8.00am (BST)
The first session of day three revolved around the different options available for students if they change their mind on which degree they want to take, the university they want to go to or if they don’t achieve the grades to progress to their first choice degree/university. Hosted by Ruth Jones, Associate Director: Student Support, Tegan Minzie, Student Support Executive and Nainika Mehta, Student Support Executive, the session opened up the discussion on the possible outcomes of students’ applications and what options they have if they don’t progress to their firm or insurance choice university. This included information about progression to the NCUK International Year One and the NCUK International Year Two in Business Management.

The second of two sessions in collaboration with NCUK Universities, was a great opportunity for counsellors to chat with university representatives and ask questions that will help in supporting students at Study Centres. Hosted by Charlotte Henshaw, Student Support Manager and Nainika Mehta, Student Support Executive, this session focused on supporting your personal development. This included information about the NCUK Student Counsellor Course and where else you can learn more and develop your skills.

'Counsellor Collaboration: Best practice within the NCUK Global Network' - 11.15am (BST)
The final session of the NCUK Student Counsellor Conference will be hosted by Megan White, Student Support Executive with representatives from NCUK Study Centres and looked at sharing best practices in student counselling. This opened the discussion on student counselling and was an opportunity to hear from experienced student counsellors.
This session was followed by the closing of the conference, led by Ruth Jones, Associate Director: Student Support.
