Top Tips From NCUK Ambassadors on Getting University Ready
Studying abroad at university is a massive step for an international student. Many won’t have travelled so far before, or experienced such a change in culture. So, how do you know what to pack for study abroad? We asked some of our NCUK Student Ambassadors for top tips on how to prepare for your university journey and what to take when studying abroad for the first time.
Chiara, University of Leeds
Before Chiara moved to the University of Leeds to study Economics, she made a list of the things she knew would make her feel university ready.
“There were so many things I had to do before I felt ready to move to university. For me they ranged from getting more comfortable with my cooking skills to checking I had all the documents I’d need. Going from living at home to studying abroad by yourself brings many challenges you’ll deal with as you go – but for me, I found doing some research into the city where I would be living was a big help. This included finding the best ways to get around, what to do in case of emergencies and more about my university“
Faris, The University of Manchester
Now studying Finance at The University of Manchester, Faris planned a lot around what he was actually going to pack and made sure he researched the city that would soon be his home.
“To get ready for university I first checked how much of my stuff would fit in my accommodation. I didn’t want to over pack or under bag so I checked what already comes with the flat and got everything else that wasn’t available already. I made sure I packed everything I couldn’t buy there so I wouldn’t end up with any duplicates or waste space on things I didn’t really need. Other than that, I kept track of my emails and checked what the University would send regarding preparing for my courses. I also researched Manchester to make sure I had an idea of where things are so that I didn’t get lost on my first days!”
Halimat, Aston University
For Halimat, knowing where to get support was essential. Fortunately, NCUK was there to help her on every step of her academic journey and she’s now enjoying her Law course at Aston University!
“When I was studying with NCUK, the staff also helped me get ready for university. They provided excellent tutoring and helpful counsel, both of which I now use at university.”
