Northern Consortium

The Northern Consortium has donated £60,000 to CARA over a three-year period. The charity was established 30 years ago by leading universities in Northern England. It’s trading arm, NCUK, now partners with 16 universities in the UK and many more overseas to help meet the charities objective of increasing access to higher education for international students. Each year, thousands of students are supported in their goal of achieving a British undergraduate or postgraduate degree.

Presentation of cheque

On Wednesday 22nd November 2017 at the NCUK Prize Award Ceremony, The Northern Consortium presented the first cheque of £20,000 to Stephen Wordsworth on behalf of CARA. CARA (the Council for At-Risk Academics) helps academics in immediate danger, those forced into exile, and many who choose to remain in their home countries despite the serious risks they face. Cara also supports higher education institutions whose continuing work is at risk or compromised.

The funds which are being provided to CARA by the Consortium will make it possible for academics to escape from danger in their own countries and to study for PhD’s at NCUK member universities, learning new skills and making new contacts which will be of enormous value to them when they are able to return home again.

Every year, Cara receives hundreds of requests for help from persecuted and at-risk academics.  Many are desperate, and in immediate danger. The funds which are being provided by the Northern Consortium will make it possible for academics to escape from danger in their own countries and to study for PhDs at Consortium member universities, learning new skills and making new contacts which will be of enormous value to these academics when they are able to return home again.

About the Northern Consortium

The Northern Consortium is a charity founded in 1987 to facilitate access to British education for international students. The Northern Consortium was established by a group of forward thinking universities in the north of England. The group, keen to share their knowledge and experience, established one of the earliest examples of transnational education.

As a result, tens of thousands of students have benefitted from access to international education over the last thirty years. In 2003, the Northern Consortium, established its wholly-owned subsidiary, NCUK, to continue to create opportunities internationally that improve access to higher education for students globally.

The Northern Consortium’s core charitable object is the advancement of education which it pursues through the activities of NCUK, and directly through the provision of scholarships, awards and investments in the international education market.
