From Taiwan to Sheffield: In Conversation with Stephen

Choosing to study abroad is a big decision, but one that can make a huge difference to your future and career prospects. We spoke to Stephen, who studied NCUK’s International Foundation Year in Taiwan before progressing to the University of Sheffield for a BA (Hons) Business Management degree, about his experiences so far.
Why Did You Choose to Study at the University of Sheffield?
The university is renowned for its global ranking among the top 100 universities, and I’ve also been awarded a 50% NCUK merit scholarship, which not only provides financial assistance but also encourages me to maintain academic excellence.
How Did You Find Out More About the University?
My NCUK Study Centre, Taipei Municipal Zhong Zheng Senior High School, offers a comprehensive university counselling service that helped me research my course and university options. With their guidance and support, I attended webinars hosted by different universities, which ultimately led me to choose the University of Sheffield.
What Do You Like Best About Living and Studying in Sheffield?
As one of the safest cities in the UK, Sheffield gives me a sense of security, and I’ve found it very easy to blend in and settle down – it’s a diverse and inclusive environment that makes me feel at home. The University itself provides exceptional student support – they’re always checking on students and there are ample opportunities for academic and personal growth.
What Are the Highlights of Your Course So Far?
Business management is a vast area, covering a wide range of topics that have given me a comprehensive understanding of different aspects of business studies. The areas I’ve studied include business management in context, business economics, accounting and finance, analysis for decision-making, behaviour at work, management themes and future-oriented perspectives. These topics are so broad and have provided me with a well-rounded education in business management, equipping me with the skills and knowledge I’ll need for future success.
Have You Had Support or Been to Any Events From the Careers Service?
So far I’ve attended future first lectures, and am currently planning to switch my course to a placement year.
How Do You Feel Your Experience in Sheffield Will Help Your Future Career?
I strongly believe that the principles of business apply to virtually every aspect of life, and the university’s curriculum directly relates to future careers, incorporating up-to-date materials that will undoubtedly prove beneficial. The focus on relevant and current industry practices will prepare me for success and give me a competitive edge in the job market.
What Would You Say to a Student Considering Studying at the University of Sheffield?
There’s so much to do apart from my academic work! I’m an active member of a student-led rocketry project called ‘Project SunrIde’, managing the Public Relations team and leading four sub-teams: Marketing, Web Development, Fundraising, and Events. Although I’m on a Business Course, being involved in this engineering project shows the university’s commitment to providing students with diverse learning opportunities, and it uses the valuable critical thinking skills I’ve learnt in my lectures. On a different note, Sheffield’s vibrant nightlife is another benefit of studying here!
