Our Founding Universities
NCUK’s University Partners has grown from our original founding universities to now include a wide range of UK universities as well as universities in Australia, New Zealand, the USA and Canada and more. Our growing Global Network provides NCUK students with more choice of study destinations than ever before. We celebrate our successes thanks to the pioneering efforts that our Founding Universities took over 30 years ago.
Established in 1987 as the Northern Consortium, a group of 12 prestigious universities came together with a shared vision to professionalise and expand opportunities for students across the globe. This collaboration was born at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) and included the following universities:
- Victoria University of Manchester
- University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST)
- University of Bradford
- University of Huddersfield
- University of Leeds
- University of Sheffield
- University of Liverpool
- University of Salford
- Liverpool John Moores University
- Manchester Metropolitan University
- Leeds Beckett University
- Sheffield Hallam University
These institutions revolutionised transnational education, starting with a groundbreaking initiative to support Malaysian government-sponsored students.
Today, the legacy of NCUK’s Founding Universities is evident in their continued dedication to academic excellence, international collaboration, and providing students worldwide with opportunities to succeed.
Through trust, innovation, and community, NCUK’s Founding Universities remain a beacon for ambitious learners seeking access to world-class education and a launchpad for their futures.
