Northumbria University provides students with access to outstanding facilities for study, research and leisure. Investment in recent years has created state-of-the-art facilities in a picturesque setting in Newcastle’s vibrant city environment. The university is in the top 10 in the UK and best rated university in the North East for sustainability (People and Planet University League 2024/25).

Voted 20th for Facilities (Whatuni Student Choice Awards 2025), students can access modern laboratories, workshops, CAD suites, media labs and modern classrooms with all the necessary IT facilities to support students with the tools they need to achieve the best education possible. Whether you compete at the highest level or simply want to stay fit and healthy, Northumbria Sport is here for all Northumbria University students. The university’s 37 Student Sport Clubs cater to everyone, from non-competitive participants to BUCS competitive teams.

Northumbria Sport operates primarily from Sport Central, a £30 million state-of-the-art facility offering students, staff and the public access to exceptional facilities and services. Northumbria University also operate Coach Lane Sports Ground with outdoor facilities including artificial and grass pitches for football, rugby, hockey and more.

The fitness suite features strength machines, a dedicated free-weights area, HIIT cardio equipment, cardiovascular machines and a large group training area. Sport Central houses an Olympic-sized swimming pool with a sauna and steam room, using UV filtration to minimise chemicals and enhance your swimming experience.

The facility includes a full-sized basketball court alongside 5-a-side football, netball and futsal courts. The Main Arena seats 3,000 spectators and can be configured into three separate courts for netball, basketball, volleyball and badminton.
