Life at Queen Mary, Malta Campus

At Queen Mary, Malta Campus, students can enjoy learning in a purposefully built medical school with a close-knit community, safe surrounding, and incredible weather. Located in the grounds of Gozo General Hospital, the campus is within walking distance of Gozo’s capital city where students can explore historical backstreets, charming cafes, as well as having access to supermarkets, shops and gyms.

With a body of around 300 students, it is easy for students to get to know all students across the five years. Having two national languages – Maltese and English – and the vast majority of the island being fluent in both, means that students can integrate easily with the welcoming local community.

Students have access to a bespoke careers programme, which includes a medical careers fair, talks by consultants and the opportunity to rotate through many different medical specialties, covering both hospital and primary care. In their final year, students are also given specific support in applying for foundation training. The Queen Mary careers team can also support with finding work experience, internships and volunteering services; provide feedback on CVs, cover letters and application forms, and interview coaching.

Most graduates work as doctors within the NHS, following training programmes in general practice or hospital medicine. Some overseas students return home to work.

The Maltese archipelago is made up of five islands, ranging from small to tiny. The two main islands which are inhabited are Malta and Gozo. The campus is in Victoria, the capital city of Gozo. However, the relatively small size of the islands means that students are within easy reach of all islands. The islands feature everything from megalithic temples, mythic caves, medieval dungeons, baroque churches, rugged terrain, hills and valleys, and picturesque beaches.

The islands may be small, but there is plenty to discover be it the oldest freestanding temples in the world, fortified cities, kayaking, diving or any watersports, swimming in crystal clear water, nightlife or cultural events.

Queen Mary, Malta is committed to providing exceptional support services tailored to students studying medicine. From the initial application to interview preparation, accommodation guidance to pastoral care, a range of support services are dedicated to ensuring students stay happy, healthy, and engaged while pursuing their journey to become doctors.

The admissions team support students until the step onto our campus, from answering general enquiries to supporting offer holders with arriving to Malta including their visa applications.

Once students arrive on campus, the Student Office is a vital part of the students’ academic journey and can be considered as the students’ first port of call for any questions or queries. The Student, Academic and Pastoral Support team are dedicated to support students holistically during their five years here – from counselling to study skills support, occupational health and a wide range of activities.

Gozo has a lot of accommodation options for students. Students privately rent, most of them living in Victoria within walking distance of the campus. Most students live in apartments, which come in all shapes and sizes. Some students opt to live in studio apartments on their own, while others opt for shared accommodation. Many feature open-plan living areas, modern fittings and furniture, balconies and terraces, while some may even feature a swimming pool or cleaning services.

The university as well as BLSA Malta (the student union) support offer holders in connecting with other offer holders or older students who are looking for flatmates as well as finding their home from home.

The campus, located in the grounds of the Gozo General Hospital, features state-of-the-art facilities. Besides lecture halls and classrooms, the campus includes a dedicated Anatomy Centre, where students do cadaveric dissection from Year 1. There is also a dedicated Clinical Skills Suite, where students can practice on a variety of mannequins as well as being set up as a hospital ward. Our dedicated PBL rooms and TBL suite facilitate collaborative and hands-on learning.

The Library and PC labs offer students a space where they can continue to study and work on their lecture content. A variety of books in the library is supplemented by a wide range of online books and tools.

To relax, students can choose between two common rooms where they can relax on bean bags and comfortable sofas, play pool or table soccer. The canteen on the top floor with panoramic views of most of Gozo offers an assortment of fresh food throughout the day.

BLSA Malta is a student-led organisation that represents students at Queen Mary, Malta Campus and is the hub of student-led activity.

The association is run by students voted into positions each academic year. The Student Presidents lead the society with support from their committee of officers with differing roles of responsibilities. The committee work together throughout the year to discuss issues facing students as well as ways of improving student experience whilst acting as a communication bridge with the university. They also organise a wide range of student activities during the year.

Moreover, with over 35 student societies on offer, ranging from sports to educational and cultural, students will find something to enjoy. Students can also set up their own student society, assisted by BLSA Malta.

Queen Mary’s Sustainability Action Statement and Environmental Policy were adopted by our Senior Executive Team as part of our immediate response to these global environmental risks and commitment to embed good environmental practices across all areas of operation. Specifically, a six-year 30% carbon reduction target against the 2018/19 baseline is one of the university’s immediate responses to the global risks associated with climate change.

The university’s long-term environmental priorities are to continue to improve environmental performance and play an active role in supporting the delivery of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs). The institution will also continue to engage with all relevant stakeholders and like-minded organisations to make our planet a better place to live.
