Any new building or refurbishment is designed to maximise energy and water efficiency while minimising carbon emissions. Brunel promotes a sustainable future by:

  • Reducing energy use and carbon emissions through cost-effective efficiency measures

  • Seeking BREEAM ‘excellent’ or ‘very good’ ratings for new buildings, and incorporating energy efficiency into annual maintenance and refurbishment programmes

To encourage recycling, disposable coffee cup points have been installed across academic, administrative, and catering areas. Collected cups are recycled into products such as benches and reusable cups, contributing to a circular economy. Food waste is one of the heaviest types of waste in general bins. Removing it reduces the overall weight of general waste, saves money, and allows the material to be recovered through anaerobic or aerobic digestion. Food waste is collected from:

  • Staff kitchens
  • Residential kitchens
  • Catering outlets

These initiatives reflect Brunel’s commitment to sustainable campus operations, environmental responsibility, and promoting eco-friendly practices across all areas of university life.
