Brisbane, Australia: My student experience at QUT Manh Hung Vu

Why I chose QUT

I chose to study at Queensland University for Technology (QUT) because I wanted to be in an environment where I could experience hands-on learning, not just read theory. QUT’s modern labs, industry-aligned courses, and focus on real-world application really stood out to me.

I’ve always been fascinated by the intricate machinery of the human body, which is why I chose to study the Bachelor of Biomedical Science. This field allows me to explore both the mystery and the logic of human biology, all while working towards something meaningful and improving human health.

A positive classroom environment

I was surprised by how collaborative and supportive the environment is, especially in lab classes. I expected competition, but what I found was a sense of community. Everyone helped each other troubleshoot, celebrated successful experiments, and laughed through the occasional failed gel run. The lecturers were also incredibly approachable. You feel like you are learning from real researchers who are genuinely excited to share their knowledge with you.

What preparing for the real world means in practice

To me, the real world means stepping beyond theory and actually applying what you learn to solve meaningful problems. One of my favourite parts of studying at QUT has been the practical learning. From the first time I used a micropipette to performing CRISPR editing and DNA cloning, I felt like I was actually doing what I used to only read about in textbooks. The lab facilities are modern and well-equipped, which made learning both exciting and empowering.

Why choose Brisbane, Australia

Australia is a global leader in biomedical research and innovation, and QUT’s connections to cutting-edge research made it the ideal place to begin my journey as a scientist. On top of that, Brisbane’s welcoming multicultural community and ideal weather made the decision even easier. It felt like a place where I could truly grow, both academically and personally.

I chose Brisbane because it’s known for being a student-friendly city. It’s safe, welcoming, and full of sunshine. What I love most is the balance. There’s nature, culture, and a relaxed vibe that puts you at ease. South Bank is one of my favourite places. It’s where I go to unwind, meet friends, or simply enjoy the riverside views.

I think it’s important to explore beyond study, whether through sports, outdoor adventures (I personally love cycling to new or faraway places), or volunteering in the community. Some of the most meaningful experiences I’ve had come from joining international student associations, where I made great friends, picked up new soft skills, and simply had fun.

Message to international students

I would recommend QUT to anyone who wants to study in a hands-on, supportive, and real-world-focused environment. The facilities are excellent, especially the labs, and the practical approach to learning really helped me apply complex concepts in meaningful ways. The lecturers and tutors are approachable and genuinely care about your progress.
