Brisbane, Australia: My student experience at QUT

Posted:

Hi, I’m Manh Hung (Leo) Vu, an international student from Vietnam pursuing a Bachelor of Biomedical Science at Queensland University of Technology (QUT) in Brisbane. My interest in biology took roots in an early fascination for microscopic cells. That interest then gradually drew me toward immunology and vaccines, a field focused on protection and prevention, and one in which I hope to build my future on.

Why I chose QUT

Choosing QUT after high school became a genuine turning point. The extensive laboratory hours and interdisciplinary learning have redirected my studies from the broad ambition of becoming a doctor to a more focused interest in research. In many ways, QUT formed my first real understanding of what a scientific career could look like. Professors here are approachable, grounded, and committed to cultivating independent thought.

That support gave me the confidence to pursue opportunities that once seemed beyond my reach. A defining highlight of my time at QUT was being selected as one of ten biomedical students to represent QUT at the Hessen International Winter University exchange program in Germany. Immersing myself in a completely different academic culture was both challenging and eye-opening, yet I felt prepared because QUT had already shaped how I think, question, and work as an aspiring scientist.

Biomedical Science at QUT

QUT’s strong links to research and industry are reflected most clearly in its culture. Students could engage in open dialogue with academics and contribute early. Programs such as the Vacation Research Experience Scheme (VRES) and the Peer Leader Program provide both research exposure and strong community support.

Practical sessions are supported by attentive staff and hands-on demonstrations. As an international student adapting to both a new country and scientific English, this environment allowed me to ask questions freely and learn through mistakes.

Preparing for the real world

Professional preparation at QUT is embodied through Work Integrated Learning and VRES. These experiences extend beyond lab manuals into experimental design, data analysis, and troubleshooting in research-like settings. Combined with the flipped-classroom model, where theory is taught before interactive workshops, knowledge becomes closely tied to application, and medicine and research begin to feel interconnected.

Why Brisbane

Brisbane itself shapes the experience. Its warmth reflects both climate and character. Green spaces such as the City Botanic Gardens and Victoria Park sit beside QUT campuses, making relaxation after lab sessions within reach. The city’s light and openness created an immediate sense of welcome from the start.

Message to international students

If you are considering studying abroad, seek a university where inquiry is welcomed and opportunities are readily available. For me, QUT has been that place. Studying within diverse scientific communities has shown that a future in medical research is attainable, even when starting from another continent. But most importantly, enjoy the full university journey – the friendships, challenges, and growth beyond any degree. So, step beyond your comfort zone, stay curious, and allow yourself the space to grow.
