From India to Newcastle University: Aaryan’s journey

Posted:

When Aaryan decided to study Computer Science abroad instead of in his native India, he researched nine countries.

But it was Newcastle University, a Russell Group world top 140 university (QS 2026), that had what he was looking for.

Why Newcastle is a perfect fit

‘When researching universities, I had a big emphasis on what I was going to study and what grabbed my attention.

‘Newcastle University appealed because of the opportunities I would get, the diversity I would experience and the facilities I could use.

‘It has world-class educational facilities and great support, especially for international students.’

Hands-on learning

‘My course is interesting, innovative, and challenging. If you were to ask me what I enjoy most, I’d say how interactive the teaching is and how helpful my professors are.

‘The course structure and the Urban Science Building – where the School of Computing is based – make Newcastle University stand out. If you like computer science, this course will just make you fall in love with it more.’

Inspiring teaching

‘A big part of choosing Newcastle was the modules I could study. I took an introductory module on Quantum Computing. I got fascinated by the topic and couldn’t stop learning and reading about it.

‘My lecturer made the topic so engaging. He’s one of the top researchers in the field according to UNESCO.’

Industry experience

‘The university’s NCL Internship programme has proved massively beneficial for me. These are part-time internships which you can do during vacation periods or sometimes alongside your studies.

‘Doing three of these internships, I got a lot of hands-on responsibilities and was accountable for everything I did. This helped me grow as a person and learn a lot more about how industry functions.’

Support to settle in

‘I was very nervous moving abroad. I’d never travelled outside of India before, plus I didn’t know anyone before moving.

‘The university’s airport meet and greet service was a massive help to make me feel calmer about my arrival and getting to my accommodation. During the International Welcome Week and Freshers’ Week the events were very helpful and fun.

‘To support my studies, I’ve also been awarded a Vice Chancellor International Scholarship worth £4,000.’

Careers focus

‘My degree has helped me gain vital industry knowledge and realise which field I would enjoy working in.

‘The Careers Service has helped me make my CV more appealing and develop skills to boost my employability. I’ve even conducted a seminar for first-year Computer Science students to help them make most of their time at university.’

Life in Newcastle

‘What really surprised me is how easy it has been to fit in. I’m part of the university cricket club, as I used to play back home, plus the Ultimate Frisbee Club and the International Society.

‘Newcastle as a city was a massive part of my decision to come here. It genuinely is the perfect place for the best student experience.
