From Indonesia to Manchester: My journey studying accounting and finance
Posted:
When I was researching universities, Manchester Metropolitan University (Manchester Met) stood out to me. The Accounting and Finance undergraduate course offered the perfect balance between theory and real-world application which is essential for building a solid foundation in finance. The University has designed the programme to be highly practical which has prepared me well for the working world. Being in Manchester, a global financial hub, also means I have access to valuable networking and internship opportunities.
A course that goes beyond the classroom
What surprised me most when I started was how much more the course offered beyond technical skills. The University places a strong emphasis on personal and professional development, which helped me adapt quickly to a new academic and cultural environment. One of the highlights was a six-week business simulation project where we applied financial concepts and developed digital skills, it was a really valuable experience. The combination of academic learning and hands-on-experience made me feel like I was preparing for the real world, and not just studying for a degree.
Supportive teaching and world-class facilities
The teaching at Manchester Metropolitan has been outstanding. Lecturers do not just deliver theory, they encourage discussions and real-world application, which makes learning engaging and relevant. The seminars are interactive, and we often work on case studies that challenge us to think critically. As an international student, I really appreciate how approachable and supportive the lecturers are.
The Business School is equipped with modern lecture halls, dedicated study spaces, and access to industry-standard software. One of the most useful resources has been the financial databases and online learning platforms. We also have access to a Bloomberg suite, which gives us hands-on experience with financial markets and trading simulations.
Life in Manchester
What I like most about student life in Manchester, is the vibrant and diverse atmosphere. The city is full of energy, with an endless array of events, festivals, and cultural activities, making it easy to connect with both local and international students.
One of the highlights of my experience has been joining societies like the Indonesian Student Association. It has given me a sense of belonging and pride. We host cultural nights and events that celebrate our heritage and promote diversity on campus.
Growing as a leader
I am proud of the leadership roles I have taken on. I am a student ambassador for the Faculty of Business and Law, a content creator, and a course representative for accounting and finance. These roles have helped me develop communication, leadership, and organisational skills while making a positive impact on the University community.
Looking ahead
My goal is to build a successful career in accounting and finance, ideally working for a global accounting firm. After gaining some work experience, I plan to pursue a masters degree in Data Analytics and earn professional certifications such as CFA, ACCA or ACA. In ten years, I see myself as a leader in the finance industry.
