Collegiate community

Lancaster’s collegiate system is at the heart of student life and one of the things that makes us special. Your college is more than just a place to live, it’s your team, your university family, and the community you’ll celebrate with at graduation. It might take a little time to get to know the others on your course or to figure out which clubs to join, but your college is a ready-made set of friends.

Clubs and societies

Lancaster University Students’ Union is your home for student life in Lancaster, enhancing every aspect; supporting academic interests, welfare issues, social life, sporting activities, hobbies, and the causes you care about.

With more than 200 clubs and societies affiliated with Lancaster University Students’ Union, there’s something for everyone. Whether you’re into sports, have a cause that you’re passionate about, a cultural or faith belief you follow, a hobby you want to nurture, or you just want to try something new, we can help you find your sense of belonging.

Exploring the City of Lancaster and beyond

Lancaster is a student-friendly city in north-west England. Our campus is just a 15-minute bus journey from the city centre, and excellent train links and close proximity to the motorway make it easy to travel around the region and the wider UK.

Vibrant culture

You’ll have everything you need on campus, but you’ll quickly discover that the City of Lancaster is a wonderful neighbour. Its fascinating heritage and stunning architecture give student life an impressive setting.

Visit the historic Lancaster Castle, wander through fascinating museums, or enjoy live performances across the city’s theatres and venues. There’s always something happening, from festivals and exhibitions to music and art events.

Shop, browse, discover

The high street is home to big brands, independent retailers, and plenty of sustainable shopping options, there’s something for everyone. We recommend visiting the weekly market to browse handmade goods, upcycled items, and enjoy delicious street food.

Places to meet and eat

The city is easily accessible by bike or bus from campus, with an array of places to eat, drink and relax with your friends. From familiar favourites like Nando’s and Starbucks, to lots of independent restaurants and cafes, you’ll find an international and diverse food and drink culture in the city. You’ll soon get to know your favourite coffee spots for catching up with friends or an afternoon of studying.

Lancaster sits in the heart of the UK

Our location gives our students a lot of choice. Spend one day enjoying the peaceful landscapes of the Lake District or the Forest of Bowland, and the next exploring the seaside charm of Morecambe Bay or riding rollercoasters at Blackpool Pleasure Beach. We’re also well connected to a variety of popular hotspots like Manchester, Liverpool and the Yorkshire Dales. Even cities like Edinburgh and London are only 2.5 hours away by train – making every weekend an opportunity for a new adventure.
