Bringing Stories to Life: The Journey of an International Student Studying Animation at Manchester Metropolitan

Posted:

I chose to study Animation at Manchester Metropolitan University (Manchester Met) because of its strong focus on the practical side of the craft. From the very start, we got hands-on experience, creating a short, animated film every year. This approach has helped me understand the animation pipeline and how each stage contributes to the finished product.

Exploring Different Styles and Techniques

When I first started at Manchester Met, I really appreciated how much the lecturers let us experiment with different mediums and styles of animation. Throughout my first year, I had the chance to explore stop motion, 2D animation, and 3D modelling, I also learnt the 12 principles of animation.

The teaching methods of the course are very practical. Our lecturers come from diverse backgrounds, including renowned stop-motion directors and 2D animators who have worked on games, television shows, and feature films. The facilities at Manchester Met are also well-equipped, with all the latest software and materials we need to create our work.

Bringing Personal Stories to the Screen

My favourite projects so far have been the short films I create each year. My first short film was a personal story about my childhood and upbringing in Brazil and family’s relationship with food. In my second film, I experimented with a different genre, using animation to explore social issues affecting minority communities in my home country.

Both films were accepted into the international film festival circuit and received awards. This type of recognition of my work has been a very fulfilling journey that has opened so many opportunities to me throughout my studies.

Life in Manchester: A Hub of Creativity and Culture

I love how Manchester is a huge city with a very active student community. There are plenty of things to do. You can go to festivals, museums, galleries, the theatre and the cinema. And with the city being a hub for diversity, there are many restaurants with cuisines from across the world.

I have also had the chance to develop new skills at Manchester Met. I have been a student representative for three years, which has helped me learn about leadership and making a change.

Looking Ahead: A Future in Animation

In the future, I intend to continue my studies with a Master’s in Animation, where I can further develop my skills as an animator. This is so I can go into industry, working as a visual developer or concept artist to gain more experience.

In 10 years’ time I see myself being able to represent the peculiarities of my culture, in Brazil, and exploring the personal and rich stories my people have to tell.

I want to show the world the beauty I see in our history, culture, folklore, and philosophy, which is often underrepresented in mainstream media.
