From India to the UK; my experience as an international student in Leicester

Avinaba Majumdar, Physics BSc with a Year in Industry, 2025.

Coming from a culturally diverse and artistically rich background in West Bengal, India, I have always had a strong focus towards going to a university that would develop my personal, academic and professional needs.

The University of Leicester’s space heritage, dating back to the 1960s really appealed to me, as well as their cutting-edge facilities. Leicester’s dedication to cultivating “Citizens of Change” and strong emphasis on embracing diversity also resonated deeply with my values.

Leicester city

My favourite thing about living in Leicester is the blend of convenience and cultural richness. Leicester is very multicultural, which is a huge advantage for international students, and the diverse range of restaurants offers a culinary journey around the world.

The city hosts the biggest Diwali celebration outside of India and other cultural events such as Chinese Lunar New Year and Caribbean Carnival, which add a festive and communal atmosphere. Leicester is also one of the most affordable cities in the UK for students ,which means I can get a balance between quality living and keeping my finances in order.

Academic life

The unique approach of research-inspired education at the University of Leicester has been a game-changer for my critical thinking skills and problem-solving approach.

A key highlight for me has been working with Professor Emma Bunce on my research project, which aligns with the University’s active space research on the BepiColombo Mission. Getting the chance to work with world-class experts like Emma has been an absolute privilege.

I recently met an astronaut, too, at Leicester’s Space Park, which was super exciting! Another highlight has been working on a British Army research project to design stealthy communication systems; it felt like something out of a spy movie!

I’m also grateful for the ongoing support from the University’s careers services, which helped me secure a placement during my year in the industry. The guidance and resources they provided have boosted my confidence and prepared me for the professional world.

Social life

Self-care is really important to me, and I actively get involved in societies, music, and spending the night out with friends, which all give me the chance to recharge.

The University of Leicester has definitely been my haven, where excellent facilities, supportive mentors and a vibrant community have not just fuelled my passion for studying Physics but have also shaped my journey of transformation. If you want to become the next “Citizen of Change”, Leicester calls for you!
