Discover how Colombian student Isabella embraced life in Belfast as a postgraduate at Queen’s University—and how living and studying abroad reshaped her perspective.
Living in the Magic of Belfast City
Studying abroad in Northern Ireland has been one of the most transformative experiences of my life. From the moment I decided to leave my home in Barranquilla, Colombia, and embark on this adventure in Belfast, I knew it would be a journey filled with challenges and discoveries. Yet, I never imagined how profoundly this experience would help me understand myself.
Culture Shock and Personal Growth
The first major challenge I faced was culture shock. Adjusting to a new country, with its different customs, language, and way of life, pushed me out of my comfort zone and demanded adaptability. Every day brought situations that tested my flexibility and openness.
Learning to communicate in English not only enhanced my language skills but also deepened my appreciation for Northern Ireland’s cultural diversity. What began as an intimidating adjustment quickly became a powerful opportunity for personal growth. I discovered my ability to face and overcome obstacles, which gave me newfound confidence.
This broadened my perspective and helped me value the differences that make our world so rich.

Autonomy and Responsibility
Living in Belfast required a new level of independence and responsibility. Far from my family and friends in Barranquilla, I had to learn how to manage my finances, time, and studies on my own. Small victories, like navigating the supermarket or mastering public transportation, became milestones in my journey toward self-sufficiency.
Managing my daily life taught me discipline and organisation. It also showed me the importance of seeking help when needed. By building a support network among my international classmates and forming meaningful relationships with people from diverse backgrounds, I experienced the value of collaboration and mutual support.

Discovering New Passions
My time in Belfast revealed passions I hadn’t previously considered. I started running in the city’s beautiful parks and trails—an activity that not only kept me active but also provided a space to reflect and unwind. Wandering through the city’s streets, exploring its architecture, and discovering hidden gems became one of my favorite pastimes.
I also fell in love with hiking. Belfast’s nearby hills and mountains offer breathtaking trails, and each hike brought a sense of achievement and a deeper connection with nature. These new interests not only enhanced my time abroad but also underscored the importance of balancing work with recreation.

Reflection and Self-Discovery
One of the most meaningful aspects of my Belfast experience has been the time dedicated to reflection and self-discovery. Being away from home allowed me to reevaluate my values, goals, and priorities. Without the distractions and expectations of my familiar environment, I explored who I truly am and what I aspire to achieve.
Spending quiet moments alone—whether exploring new cities or relaxing in a park—helped me connect with myself on a deeper level. I took up meditation and journaling, which became invaluable tools for processing my experiences and understanding my emotions. This journey of self-awareness has been instrumental in my personal and professional growth.

Resilience and Adaptability
Above all, my time in Belfast has taught me the importance of resilience and adaptability. Life is full of unexpected changes, and this experience has prepared me to face the unknown with optimism and creativity. I’ve learned to see obstacles as opportunities for growth and to adapt to new circumstances with confidence.
Living in Belfast and studying at Queen’s has been a life-changing adventure. It has allowed me to immerse myself in new cultures, sharpen my academic skills, and better understand myself.

Through the challenges and triumphs of this journey, I’ve discovered my inner strength, my adaptability, and my true potential. This experience has transformed me and given me the confidence to face the future with clarity and determination.
