Ten new guides to help IFY students connect their module choices to their degree goals and university destinations.

NCUK has introduced ten subject pathway guides for its International Foundation Year (IFY), helping students choose the modules that best support the degree they want to study, and showing where those choices can lead across NCUK’s growing number of university partners.

IFY students take three academic subject modules, chosen from 12, alongside academic English and Skills for Success.

Reflecting on what students want to study

The pathways align with the subject areas NCUK students say they are most interested in. In NCUK’s most recent survey of current students (88% of which are studying the IFY), Business was the most popular subject area at 13%, followed by Accounting and Finance (8%) and Computer Engineering (7%). Counsellors report growing interest in AI, Data Science, Cybersecurity, Business Analytics and health-related disciplines.

These patterns point to students who are focused on real-world outcomes. The pathway guides directly respond to that, helping students make module choices that are aligned with their ambitions from day one, rather than working backwards from course requirements later.

What this means for students, families and partners

Instead of checking modules against course requirements one by one, students can start with the degree area they care about and see a suggested route forward. When their modules match their ambitions, they are better placed to meet the subject and grade requirements for their preferred courses.

For parents, the pathways offer a clear, practical view of how the IFY connects to real degree outcomes. Degree courses such as Medicine and Dentistry have additional requirements and limited places, and the relevant pathway guides help students understand these expectations from the start.

NCUK Study Centres remain central to every student’s choices, advising on modules, confirming what is available locally and checking requirements for each student’s goals. The pathways give Study Centre staff a consistent, shared starting point for these conversations.

For NCUK University Partners, the pathways reinforce what the IFY already offers: students who arrive with relevant subject knowledge, strong academic English and the study skills needed for degree-level learning.

Strong university destinations across every subject area

Whichever pathway guide a student explores, NCUK’s university network offers strong destinations. It includes members of the UK’s Russell Group and Australia’s Group of Eight, with 11 University Partners ranked in the world’s Top 100 and 22 in the Top 200 (QS World University Rankings 2027), across subject areas from Business and Engineering to Medicine and the Creative Arts.

Prospective students can explore all ten guides from the IFY webpage and are encouraged to speak with their local Study Centre before choosing modules.
