Career-Ready Students: The Impact of University Career Guidance

Posted:

University is more than lectures, textbooks, and exams, it’s the perfect time to shape your future. Most Universities have Careers Services available to all students, offering support building your CV, applying for jobs, preparing for interviews and much more. Making the most of every resource available can set you apart and position you for success in your career. In this blog, you will hear from former NCUK Students who are now studying at top universities abroad and are already thinking about the next steps after they graduate.

Şevval Önder says:

“Using careers and employability services helps students gain practical skills such as CV writing, interview preparation, and job search strategies. It also provides access to internships, networking opportunities, and career fairs, which can open doors to future employers. Most importantly, these services give personalised guidance to help students identify their strengths, explore career options, and build confidence for life after university.”

Agga says:

“Careers and employability services are invaluable. However, it is up to you to make the best use of it. It is best to be proactive and have appointments with the careers service if you have any concerns about internships, or your CV/application. You can book a face-to-face CV workshop or an interview simulation. Without this help, I wouldn’t have been able to land my internships in Uganda and placement year at AstraZeneca. You don’t have to figure things out on your own, do ask for help.”

“The careers and employability services at my university offer amazing support for both part-time and full-time work opportunities. For part-time work, they make job hunting super easy with their comprehensive website. You can book one-on-one appointments to get personalized help with your CVs, cover letters, and interview preparation. They’ve got tons of written resources covering all these topics, and they regularly organize talks and seminars that give you the inside scoop on workplace expectations and available opportunities.

What I really love about their part-time work support is that they don’t just help you land the job and then disappear. They provide fantastic after-employment support too. Before you start working, they run mandatory induction sessions to make sure you understand everything about the payment system and when to expect your salary. They’ve got really helpful resources explaining how to handle timesheets and navigate the tax system, and they’re always there if you run into any issues.”
